Self Defense ...

Women's self-defense classes are being co-sponsored by WAVAW and the CWRU Women's Center. Explore with other women the problem of rape, how it affects our lives, and what we can do about it. Learn to analyze victim behavior that makes you appear vulnerable to others. Reclaim your physical integrity by turning fear of rape into anger about rape and learn your options for reasonable choices in handling violent and potentially violent situations. In addition to learning practical physical techniques to be used when your judgment indicates their necessity, we will work on ending our vulnerability to rape. The next six-week class runs from March 17-April 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the CWRU Thwing Center Spartan Room on the third floor. The Instructor is Deborah McCormick and the cost is $15, more if you can, less if you can't, $1 minimum. WOMEN AND MALE VIOLENCE

The Visions and Struggles of the Battered Women's Movement Susan Schechter

Schechter covers in vivid detail the emergence of the first shelters in 1976; the gradual establishment of state and national coalitions; the struggle for police, judicial, and social service reforms; the role of academic sociologists; racism; the particular role of lesbians and men; and the current right wing attack and government cutbacks.

Schechter writes this important piece of recent women's history and feminist theory with the compassion and insight of an activist and participant. Stories, interviews, and first-hand experience provide overwhelming evidence of the institutional and cultural realities that encourage and perpetuate male violence and prevent women from stopping it.

"Schechter has made a magnificent contribution to the growing body of feminist theory..."
